Looking for a way for your organization to give back in a meaningful setting? We need as many hands as we can get to be involved in caring for this incredible valley and conserving its many resources, native plants and animals, and the endangered species that call Waimea home. You can find out more on the Waimea website under the volunteers tab (here) or if you have any questions you can email the volunteer coordinator (here.)
The conservation work at Waimea valley happen through our public conservation workdays, exclusive group events and with the help of individual registered volunteers. This request is for the exclusive workdays, the other options will be covered in separate posts.
The exclusive volunteer days are set up as service-learning events, so that participants can gain a deeper understanding of Hawaii, its culture and its ecosystems from their time with us. The events can be set up for any day of the week and are divided into two types:
- Hānai 'āina Conservation workdays- Invasive species removal
- The events run from 9am-3pm and volunteers need to be able to attend the entire event
- The volunteer work will be clearing the invasive weeds that threaten our botanical garden collections and the habitat of the native species living in the valley
- All participants in these events earn free entry to the valley, good for the rest of that day. We hope that they take time to explore the gardens and cultural sites after the work is done. If it is open they may also swim at the falls.
- These can happen any day of the week as long as there is not another event that day
- Hānai 'āina Conservation workdays- Forest Restoration
- The events run from 9am-3pm and volunteers need to be able to attend the entire event
- The volunteer work will be in our forest restoration sites on the central ridge in Waimea Valley. we will be clearing invasive weeds, caring for native plants and occasionally planting more native species to grow the native forest land.
- All participants in these events earn free entry to the valley, good for the rest of that day. We hope that they take time to explore the gardens and cultural sites after the work is done. If it is open they may also swim at the falls.
- The preferred days of the week for these are Mondays through Thursdays, but accommodations can be made for other dates with enough forewarning.
Group leaders are required to set reservations for any intended workdays as we need to ensure staff availability. Events need to be set about 3 weeks in advance so that there is ample time to plan.
